This fic, like most of my fics, is very canon-intensive, so I don't think your brain is shallow - you just haven't got there yet. :) Here I play a lot with canon info, especially from the sound and picture episodes, where you get to know more about their childhood. Also, the anime leaves most of its character development to the very end, so keep on watching and have fun. XD
